Hi Everybody:
Is this baby healthy? Bright? Active? Nursing well? Developmentally on
target? Why is this baby expected to gain "x" amount of weight?
5 people out of 100 will be at the 5th percentile; that is what percentile
means. My neighbor's 8 year-old son has now made it onto the growth charts for
the first time. He has always been healthy, developmentally fine, and small.
Breastfed for over 2 years; born at 5 pounds, 7 ounces. My daughter, only 20
weeks older, towers head and shoulders (and 20 pounds) over him. His dad and I
are the same height: 5"7". His mother is much smaller.
Women are advised to wean because the baby has been gaining slowly. Guess
what. The baby continues to gain slowly, no matter what they are fed. Why,
whenever there is a "problem" would one substitute inferior food to human
milk?
I have heard it said that the growth charts in and of themselves aren't so
bad, it is how they are used that is the problem. Warmly, Nikki
