I am a RN in a very busy NICU in South Florida...also Certified Lactation
Counselor...and I've noticed the chronic babies in our unit whether they have
BPD or belly issues are getting more and more formula. It seems as if the MD's
when all else fails removes the mother's milk from the feeding regime and
starts formula (or it could be mom's running out of milk after a 120 days of
pumping which is a whole other topic for discussion...)

I have a theory (and I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this) that the
addition of a probiotic to help reculture the gut and/or introducing digestive
enzymes may help in their digestion. Eventhough, I know mother's milk is easily
digested perhaps the babies' gi systems are being compromised by prolonged
antibiotic therapies.

Does anyone know of any documented research regarding use of probiotic or
digestive enzymes in the infant population.

Thank you so much for your help.
