Hi, Trish -
I hope you join the Indian Health Service. I've not worked for them,
but I'm part Indian/Native American and I've spoken to some fellow WIC
workers that are from the Indian Nations/Tribes in Florida and Oklahoma.
Breastfeeding rates were low in those areas -- similar to what I see in
our predominantly African American WIC population. But our rates are going
up!
Best Start has 3 pamphlets: Busy Moms, Embarrassment, and Encouragement
that were developed by taking pictures of Indian Moms in Oklahoma on a very
hot day (as Linda Inglis (sp) from Best Start told me :-). They have
posters also. I'm proud of Best Start for doing this work, and their number
is: 1-800-277-4975.
The pamphlets address the main barriers our Moms in WIC talk about when
considering breastfeeding. If you do end up working for the Indian Health
Service, I'd be interested in helping you with resources or helping you to
link with WIC as WIC has a federal mandate to promote & support
breastfeeding.
