Hello Wise ones,

The formula marketing issue is always heavy on my mind, and I soon hope to address this at my hospital/clinic (it's small/all rolled into one: about 40 deliveries/month).

I am trying to gather data to back up my position before I present my concerns, because most people don't get it (even breastfeeding moms: one said, "Renee, I love ya, but come on, when I don't have enough money to buy IUDs I'll welcome anything that's free... talking about a patient teaching flip folder printed and provided free by MJ)

My ethical dilema is that I use handouts from Medela and Ameda and the LLL/Lansinoh handout that comes with a free sample of Lansinoh.

Should I give these up in order to be consistent in my message?

Sincerely,
Renee Mercier RN IBCLC
(small military hospital/clinic in Western WA)

PS: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! TO Marsha Walker for that awesome review of the issues surrounding the marketing of formula.

One idea I have is to create a "badge holder trade in" program: raise some funds and buy mother/baby type badge holders and trade them for the Similac and Enfamil badge holders that staff wear and patients see, right at eye level when the staff is leaning over them assisting w/latch, etc. Talk about mixed messages!
