Does anyone know anything about very large babies and early weight
loss? Baby is 4 weeks, weighed 11lb (4.9kg) at birth. Mother said
he was rather puffy looking, especially around the face. He was not
weighed again until today and now appears to be 10oz (300gm) below
birthweight (note: different scales). No diabetes, no medical
problems. Fully breastfed. Numerous wet nappies, bowel movements
nearly every nappy change. Appears to be feeding well although
spends up to an hour on the breast, settles well between feeds,
sleeps with mother and feeds every couple of hours but she is not
sure for how long as she dozes off. Nipples fine, supply seems good.
She is now under notice to get his weight up or supplement.

Is there anything documented, or does anyone have experience with
this? My hunch is that he was born full of fluid, for whatever
reason, which he has been shedding. How long might this go on for?
Should he be gaining again by now? Of course we don't know where
his weight has been over the past four weeks. Mother says he looks
a little thinner and not so puffy around the face.

My 10+ pounder regained his birthweight by day 4, but he never looked
what I would call puffy.
