Dear Suzanne--
As a pediatrician, I would have hospitalized the baby right away due to the
large weight loss and serious risk of dehydration from inadequate
fluid/calorie intake. That would have allowed observed feedings,
supplementation, and LC consultation all under controlled circumstances, as
well as evaluation for dehydration, etc. I suspect the wet nurse actually
saved this baby's life by providing her with near-adequate calorie/fluid
intake at a very critical juncture. Since the baby is apparently able to take
in enough fluid/calories when wet-nursed, her suck must be at least marginally
adequate. The mom likely has inadequate milk production. This baby may well
need intensive and long-term supplementation since mom does not seem to be
making much milk. The situation needs very frequent supervision over a long
term.
