In Linda Smith's response to belly balls she mentions also having a 2 oz.
cup to demonstrate the average intake of babies during the first 6 months.
Is anyone aware of any research on this? Frankly, in my private practice,
if mothers find it necessary to nurse more than 8 times in 24 hours for more
than a few days to correct a problem, or during a growth spurt, they'd quit
nursing, feeling it to be abnormal and confining. Any additional sucking
needs baby has, they prefer to provide with a pacifier. I recall being
surprised that when one of my daughters' had to go back to work, she pumped
7-8oz each time and this was what the baby took per feed, by bottle, in her
mother's absence, before she started solids.
I'd also like to know what others tell mothers is the average amount of
breastmilk needed per 24 hours at various ages.
Thank you,
Anne Grider, IBCLC
