Jackie reported a recent increase in contacts with mothers whose supply had
dropped and who were using 'minipills'.

If mothers are leaving their babies because of job constraints, and babies
are sleeping through the night, and mothers are only removing milk from
their breasts 6 times in 24 hours, they will experience a drop in supply,
regardless of other factors, in the vast majority of cases. Changing any
part of this equation could help.

And if this is a description of their lives and they don't want to get
pregnant immediately, they DO need to deal with contraception. Some people
confuse the single-hormone minipill with very low dose combination oral
contraceptives so I assume you are helping them make the distinction and
choose the one least likely to undermine lactation.

Once again, this points up the acute need for protective legislation for
babies and their mothers in 'the freest country in the world'. If mothers
could choose to stay home longer, or if they were assured the necessary time
and facilities to express milk at no loss in pay, the supply issues might
never arise. The duration of breastfeeding in Norway has increased in tempo
with the increase in maternity leave since the 1980's. The only down side
of long paid leaves is that fewer women feel comfortable asserting their
legal right to time off for expressing or BF when they wait 12 months to
return to work outside the home.
