We have talked, in the past, about the need to design an artificial nipple
that works more like the "real thing" to facilitate getting the baby to the
breast as soon as possible without nipple confusion problems. This would be
helpful for babies who can't go to the breast for a time after birth
(premies, sick babies, Mom's in ICU, etc.) and for those who need
supplementation (inadequate weight gain, Mom's return to work, etc.)

I got this e-mail today. I don't know who the sponsoring organization is,
and I don't have any info than what is contained in the message. Anybody
care to reply to them?

Subject: We Need Your Help

Dear Lactation Consultant:

We are a marketing consultant that has been asked by
our client to investigate the wonderful world of
infant feeding. More specifically, we're searching for
information that will provide answers to the question
of bottle nipple design for breast fed infants:

1. Is there any published literature or recognized
guideline that delineates how a nipple should be
designed for an infant who is breastfeeding?
  A. If so, what is it/where can it be found?
  B. If not, how are the manufacturers who currently
market bottle nipples providing proof for some of
their claims ie "next best thing to breastfeeding";
"nipple form and function closest to the breast"

2. Who are the "thought leaders"/experts in your
organization specific to this area?

3. How does new information get disseminated among
your group?

Please respond if you are interested in helping us
with our situation.

Thank you for your consideration.
