I went to a conference last Thurs and Friday. The main speaker was Jack
Newman MD. He spoke of the difficulties of breastfeeding in a bottle feeding
culture, and of the origin of such a bottlefeeding culture, and associated
myths. He also came out very strongly regarding the history of pediatrics'
involvement with the development and marketing of baby milks.

It was truly an inspiring day, to hear from a physician that women need to
be listened to , and that breastfeeding is important. It is important to
mothers and babies thorughout the world. He reported an astonishing figure,
that recently, the breastfeeding initiation rate in HOng Kong was less than
1%. I could not believe this.

Jack was a dynamic speaker who tells it like it is. He would have been PROUD
of Kathy A's Abbot Ross speech.

"The recognition of oneself as part of nature, and reliance on natural
things, are disappearing for hundreds of millions of people who do not know
that anything is being lost."
Robinson Davies, The Rebel Angels.

With warm regards to my colleagues,

Kathleen Bruce
