Your dentist doesn't know what he doesn't know.  My third child was born
with hypoplastic (very thin) enamel and her front teeth rotted as they came
down.  The caries spread to back teeth, aided by a silent reflux.  She had
the front teeth capped and the back ones filled under general at just under
2.  I was warned that unless I weaned her instantly, I would be back for
another general within six months.  I knew otherwise (had an older child
with similar condition and another with perfect teeth who breastfeed every
45-90 mins around the clock for over a year and cut his first tooth at 12
weeks old).  Eva is now 4 and a half.  She breastfed day and night until she
was 3 and a half.  No more caries.  I realise this is an n=1.  However, if
you read Yvonne's thesis posted today, you will find that there is
absolutely NO evidence to support your dentist's position. Try to remember
that mothers outrank dentists and that even if breastfeeding did put teeth
at risk, breastfeeding is way too important (and weaning way too traumatic)
to put stop for the sake of a few hundred (in our case, a few thousand)
dollars worth of dentistry.
