Dear colleagues:

I have read the recent posts on various paths to becoming an LC (or IBCLC)
with interest. One priceless benefit of the LLL Leader route is its
mother/child friendliness. If the only path available to becoming an IBCLC
were via the classroom, it would take many of us a very long time to become
certified--since we are also raising young children. While I highly value
the education I have received in most classrooms, it is not the only way to
learn and it is not always the best way to learn. Furthermore, the
classroom can be a poor to impossible option for the mother of young
children. So I hope that our profession--whose purpose is to help mothers
and children--will find creative and bold ways to also meet the needs of
those in its ranks who are mothers. If not, the diversity among us in
experience, cultural beliefs, and life styles will diminish accordingly.

I'm still nomail and working hard on vitamin D supplementation in the
breastfed infant. So, if you'd like to reply, please do so privately as
well!

Warmly,

Cynthia
