Hello Fellow lactnetters,
I am a lactation consultant in a very busy hospital. I have been
asked to do a class for new labor and delivery nurses. It is a great
opportunity to be able to get to them before they are taught some of the
misconceptions about breastfeeding immediately after birth. We have
labor, delivery and recovery rooms so unless there is a medical problem
with the baby, the baby never leaves that room. Do any of you who might
work in L+D or be mid-wives have any suggestions as the best or most
important points to cover. I am definitely planning to stress the
importance offering the breast early but am open to suggestions. It has
been more than 20 years (aurgh!) since I worked in L+D. Now I see these
moms and babies after someone in L+D has told them to wait until they
get to their room to breastfeed.
