>breastfeeding put out by a baby products company (Johnson & Johnson) The
>only piece of real obvious misinformation that I could see <

In a lecture given many years ago by E.Sterken of INFACT Canada I learned
how it is the not-so-obvious messages in printed material that we need to
watch. While the breastfeeding information may be good, there can be several
subtle messages that make breastfeeding appear in a different light. A
couple of examples:
In a booklet: Only the pictures of bottlefeeding mothers show mom-baby eye
contact. The nursing mother is not smiling. She is holding the baby in an
awkward position. She is less fashionably dressed or in a bathrobe.
In a video: A question a mother asks (How do I know if baby is getting
enough?) is never answered.

A nurse once attended my LLL group and was very surprised when she brought
a lovely poster of a nursing baby to the meeting, and we did not allow it to
be posted. What an education it was for the nurse when we showed her how the
subtle messages undermined breastfeeding. The poster was put out by a
formula company. The caption said, "breastmilk is the ideal food for young
infants. This tells us
1. Breastmilk is just a food.
2. It's ideal, but we know what Diane Wessignger says about "ideals" being
unnecessary
3. It's only for young infants. What age does one stop being a "young"
infant? What about old infants?
4. The mother was in a nightgown. Only sick people spend their days in a
nightgown.
5. It advertised a formula while saying breastfeeding was ideal. Mixed
message.
