It is very unfortunate when offence is taken at something written, one does not hear the tone of voice, maybe a smile in the voice or even a laugh of apology and it is very easy to misunderstand the written word.
But perhaps we should stop the "breastbeating" (forgive the pun) on this subject and remember the words of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayam:
The moving finger writes, and having writ,
Moves on; nor all they piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line,
Nor all they tears wash out a word of it.
