Happy Easter All!!!
Maybe that is why there isn't much activity on Lactnet. Also, didn't Passover
begin on Friday?

Jenny-about that book. I think it's a great idea. Patty mentions that BAB is a
good book, probably similar to what is being discussed. Another book that goes
into more detail, adds other topics & different solutions would be a welcome
addition to any LC's resources. Go for it!

To BPhipps--There was an intense discussion about NB sleeping in the 1st 24
hrs of life at the 1997 International Conference on the Theory & Practice of
Human Lactation, Breastfeeding Management & Research at Lake Buena Vista, FL.
As I remember the bottom line conclusion: if baby is normal, healthy infant &
nurses well at least 1 time in that 1st 24 hrs no intervention is needed. So
your practice seems to be in line with the majority at that conference. Babies
need to remain with mother continuously or as much as poss., preferably skin-
to-skin for some of that time. Periodic attempts to wake baby & place at
breast are encouraged.
We find that visitors are often a big deterent to BF in the 1st days. : (
We have very open visiting hours at our hospital
.
I agree with Peggy-babies do seem to do better if they are put to breast in
L&D immed. after birth. We also encourage moms to BF in recovery room after
Cesarean Birth. Isn't there a study or 2 that support this. There is always
the Righert (sp?) & Franz video of babies self-attachment to breast.

Dr. Jack-I too remember when babies were NPO x24 hrs after birth. Most of the
babies I saw were sleeping because mom had IV drugs to keep her asleep during
labor-"Twilight Sleep"-more like DEEP sleep. I had the impression that all
babies needed to be resucitated at birth. Boy was I surprised when my own
babies were born without drugs & wide awake. Unfortunately, they were also NPO
until they started to BF. That was 26 & 28 yrs ago. I knew so little then!!
Poor babies!!
I also agree with the approx. 12 hr. time-I will start to intervene to get
baby awake & interested in BF. Of course, sometimes sooner if I'm getting
ready to go off duty & I know some other nurse will panic, tell mom that the
baby hasn't had a wet diaper, has lost weight & needs to eat!! (...and if
babies don't eat, they become dehydrated & may have permanent brain damage or
they could die! Yes, we have actually had nurses tell moms this. Talk about
laying on a guilt trip!) If only we could have an educated BF person on duty
at all times in every hospital! If only we could live in a perfect world!

Dreaming on & on & on,
