I was recently contacted by a local homebirth Midwifery practice. They
have a client 12 days postpartum who spent several days in the hospital
after her homebirth with a severely jaundiced baby. When they came home
(after successfully breastfeeding the entire time), she found out she
needed "emergency" gall bladder surgery (gall stones diagnosed in
pregnancy). Never mind about whether or not this really was an
emergency. Surgeon told her she would not be able to BF for at least 48
hours (AARGH). Midwives are advising her on the truth of that statement
if the surgery goes well (Laparoscopic). But they wanted to know if I
could find anyone willing to donate EBM or serve as "wet nurse" "just in
case." I sent out emails to the several yahoo groups I belong to in the
area and made a few phone calls.

Here's the great news - they got FIVE calls within the day from women
wanting to donate as much as 50 ounces (imagine her freezer!) or to come
to her home to nurse her baby for her. All were willing to answer
health questions, etc.

I am AMAZED and delighted at the generosity of spirit of these new moms
here in Northern NJ!

Just wanted to share the love . . .
