I am a hospital-based RN/LC and I am looking for any sources of information on the effect of taking steroids during labor and throughout the first 7 days postpartum (due to MS) and any delay in lactogenesis II. One of our patients has had this experience and on day 9 still has a very small milk supply. She denies any heavy lochia or any breast surgeries or trauma. She reports having had normal breast changes during pregnancy. Baby was seen and is feeding well, and also transfering the milk she does have well. She states the baby feeds at breast every 2 hours around the clock and is taking about 2 oz. of formula afterward. We encouraged her to continue to feed often at breast and note any increase in swallowing and breast fullness over the next few days, then reevaluate.

Can anyone add anything else and/or share any resources regarding steroid use and milk supply?

Thank you,

Linda Vawter, RN, IBCLC
