To those who responded by posting or emailing me privately about my Yes, But
client,

Sincere thanks for your responses....You folks are GREAT. I was frustrated
prenatally when she seemed not to comprehend the importance of nutrition
counseling that might impact on her fluid retention, her health and her
baby's. Then, when postnatally she brought the problem with the ABMs to me
and appeared to be wanting to relactate one moment, and not the next,
alternately open to and closed to suggestions, I really needed to vent my
frustration. I truly wondered if she would contact the LC I'd suggested to
work with.

The general consensus of your suggestions included referring her for mental
health counseling, your support that I had done all I could do, and
encouragement to continue putting my energy into those situations where a
difference could be made. The client did contact the LC I had recommended
(our very own terrific Cathy Genna !) so I can leave on vacation knowing
she's in excellent hands.

For Margie who wondered whether the father seemed controlling. No, he
definitely didn't. But I appreciate you pointing it out as a possibility.
The advantage I have in knowing clients throughout their prenatal Lamaze
series and then seeing what happens after the birth, is that I can get a
pretty good feel for what's going on. She is very verbal. He could barely
get a word in edgewise. It was an act of courage on his part (and good
prenatal fathering of his child) to clarify how much sodium she'd actually
been taking in when she denied using it. They're from another country and
both their mothers flew in when she was in ICU. IMO control may be an
issue, but I think it may be hers rather than his. She probably would
benefit from some mental health counseling in that regard. Regarding your
wondering whether she wanted a baby, I don't know the answer to that. Yes,
there was lots more going on than met the eye.....

I'm off to heal the mind and spirit, ladies, and please know that you have
my heartfelt appreciation for your caring and giving nature.
