It is interesting how often this issue of nursing after breast surgery
comes up. The advice the FP gave to the patient is disappointing and off
the cuff, and unsubstantiated!! I cannot understand why doctors think that
breastfeeding is a dispensible, optional, recreational activity. The woman
needs to breastfeed, and there is no reason why she should not. If the
breast that was operated on involutes, or does not make enough milk, then
the other breast most likely will make up for the other, by increasing
nursing on that side. If mom gets mastitis, give her antibiotics!! I would
copy a chapter out of Ruth Lawrence's book on nursing post breast surgery
and give it to the doctor.-Anne Eglash MD
HEY...where are you???I see you are with facstaff.wisc.edu and so
am I. I am in Madison, and work in Mt. Horeb, and at Meriter hospital. If
you and/or the FP would like to contact me for more info I am at
608-437-3064(office). I would be happy to do a talk to doctors in your
area, because I did a talk on this a couple times this year, so have the
info all put together.-Anne
