Jan: I've just caught up on my past lactnet posts and came across your post
regarding not clipping frena.

Unfortunately, the literature on ankyloglosia abounds with opinions and
cautions against clipping and treating a short and or tight lingual frenulum.
That is part of the reason we meet with such resistance today. Many people
who read the literature that claims this (this claim is made in literature
from several different disciplines) believe what the literature says despite
the fact that the claims are NOT research-based. They are merely the
statements of someone's opinion. The speech literature actually contains some
of the few references that support frenotomy or frenectomy ( depending how
much of the genioglossus muscle is involved) for the treatment of tongue-tie.

My thesis contains a 40 page literature review wherein I analysed all of the
available literature on tongue-tie from as far back as 2000 years, ( a
reference found in the Bible). This literature contains many more caveats
about treatment than it does support for treatment. Again, most of it is
opinion and conjecture, rather than research-based.
