I was doing post partum registry nursing and ran across a mom who was a
flight attendant and was currently assigned to a crew who did flights from
America to Asia as their route. She had a two year old and a newborn. I
asked her how she was planning to continue to breastfeed when she went back
to work. She gave me a soft smile and said that she had it all
undercontrol. Obviously I was very curious so she went on. She would go
in to the little bathrooms and pump or at the end of a flight she would
pump in the back seats with a blanket over her. Obviously not the most
ideal setting but you have to give her an "A" for effort. She would then go
to the crew of the next flight returning to San Diego and would give one of
the flight attendants her bag of freshly pumped milk packed with the dry
ice from the plane's ice bin. She said she always would seek out the
female flight attendants but one time there was an all male crew, but they
also were happy to ablige, and proudly delivered the milk down the gate way
to the father who was waiting for the milk with baby in his hip. She said
that the crews were always very supportive, the only hard times she got
were from the pilots teasing her about bringing them fresh cream for their
coffee. Ah the interesting world we live in. I thought others might enjoy
that story as much as I did.
Cheers,
