Hello all of you lactation experts. I know that someone out there can help
me with this!

I am an IBCLC who has never dealt hands on with a Downs baby. I have my
first Downs baby and her mom coming in to see me and a fellow CLC in my WIC
office next week. Mom and baby were referred to me by her midwife. The baby
is now 2 months old and mom received conflicting advice from baby's
birth....and of course, the baby was bottle fed right at birth. She has a
milk supply (yay!) because she has been pumping for 2 months, but she is
very concerend because her milk supply is dropping down to 65 ccs per
pumping session. She pumps with a Lactina for 45 minutes per pumping
session. I told her that was way too long to double pump, and to go for
shorter (15-minute) pumping sessions at a more freqeunt pace. I also told
her my Fenugreek/Blessed Thistle recipe.

Baby was 5-8 at birth and last week weighed in at 5-13. She is now
supplementing with Nutramigen, since her supply is going down. Baby has not
really nursed actively at the breast for one month. Mom does attempt baby
at the breast twice very day.

Since neither of us has worked with these special children before, I am
asking for any tips you may have. I couldn't find much on the archives (not
sure why). I know certain basics: low tone problems, dancer hand hold for
chin support. Anything else we can do? And do you think it is possible for
this mom to relactate at this point and be able to breastfeed. She is SOOOO
committed.

Thank you so very much in advance,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
