Believe it or not, scientists have tested memory in young infants, and
they are very capable indeed.
Richard Restak MD's book "The Infant Mind" explains some of these
studies.  It is out of print, but you might find it in the public
library.

The other factor in maternal/infant togetherness is the autonomic
regulation of the infant by contact with the mother.  Dr. James McKenna
has studied this issue due to his interest in co-sleeping.
