One reason a formula company may wish to distribute breastfeeding books
is that formerly breastfeeding women are the best market for formula.
Women who start out breastfeeding and switch to formula will use
formula until the baby is at least a year old, whereas women who start
out formula feeding often switch to cow milk by about 6 mos. If the
formula company can convince breastfeeding women that they are
pro-breastfeeding, they may get those women to buy their brand when they
wean. The formula company has a name for this market- "post-breast",
and they track it very carefully.
