<snip> Sooo, I am sure none of us on the listserve fit into the
mold of who would not typically breastfeed! Dr. Haynes said if you
don't like the ads, that's good, because they are not targeted to you!
These images are what the TARGET groups picked out as being most
effective.<snip>

Ok. I've got to add my 2 cents here. I teach weekly breastfeeding classes
at the local WIC office and also lead a monthly breastfeeding support group
outside of WIC. At our last support group meeting, one of the moms from the
WIC class came (who said she had been "unable" to breastfeed her first two
children for long because of mastitis but said she wants to nurse her
upcoming baby) and asked me about the ads--she had actually seen one! She
didn't really "get it" as she thought the log rolling women were "dancing on
the water"--log rolling contests are not a normal part of the culture here
in Georgia and I suppose she didn't have a frame of reference for it! She
would be a target of the ads as a WIC recipient in Georgia, a state with one
of the lowest breastfeeding rates.

Also, the ads aren't' really what the focus groups said would work--that
women already knew about the benefits of breastfeeding and they needed to
know about the *risks* of not breastfeeding. The ads don't really mesh,
IMO. They talk about not taking risks but then only mention the *benefits*
of breastfeeding. I'm not sure how many women in the target group make that
connection. After all, they weren't making that connection before,
according to the findings of the focus groups.

That said, I'm glad they are being aired--better something than nothing and
better what we have currently than just an ignorable warm fuzzy.

Chrissy
