Querida Chris and Lactnet,
En la website de Texas WIC, ay mucho informacione sobre dar pecho en
espanol. Lo siento que no tengo el URL.
Check out the Texas WIC website, they have lots of Spanish handouts. Sorry
I do not have the URL.

Learning more spanish from my bfdg moms and dads is one of my greatest
pleasures on the job. When I took this job about a year ago, I could just
say, "Buenos dias, yo soy la especialista de amamantar." This morning, I
did a whole discharge teaching on 10% wt loss and the s/s of dehydration in
spanish! I have learned just about all my spanish on the job, from my
patients. I would encourage Lactnetters to just jump in and start talking,
you will be surprised how much you can say, and how much your patients will
help you learn.
OOXXOO to all

Gunda,

New Jersey's own Cathay Knipscher has worked with a Spanish-speaking staff
member to develop a "Breastfeeding Spanish" booklet. It gives many common
phrases and questions a health professional uses with a nursing mom, in
English, Spanish, and phonetic Spanish. With this booklet you can get pretty
far into the basics with a mom.

The last I remember, our NJ Breastfeeding Task Force was planning to produce
and distribute the booklet. When it's available, I'll post the news on
Lactnet.

I think we need a crash course in speaking and using "Breastfeeding
Spanish,"
though. Does anyone know...has any state WIC ever organized such a thing?
Lots of people (myself included) have had a little Spanish exposure in
school
but just don't feel sure of trying it out. A half-day workshop at a state
meeting might give us confidence.
