No-  this mom absolutely does NOT need to wean.

Although, if the surgeon would have made a radial incision rather than
peri-areolar, it would be a lot easier to pump the affected breast.

There is absolutely no evidence it is harmful to continue lactating after
draining an abscess.  I had a mom in February who had a very similar story,
who was completely healed 3 weeks after draining and packing of 3 MRSA
abscesses in one breast.

If she insists she must dry up the affected side, she can just breastfeed
on the unaffected side. But I would encourage her to keep the milk (and
pus) flowing until she has healed completely, at which point she will
hopefully see that is not necessary. (Nor desirable)
