It is very hard to let go when you feel you really could have helped. But
these cases are hard to do by phone. However, let this one go. It sounds
like there are too many cooks in the kitchen. If you feel you have a very
good rapport with the family and may be seeing them for any followup, then
you might request that the family give permission for a report to be sent to
you from the lactation clinic. This I would love to do, to see what their
findings are and their interventions - I know I would learn something.
I recently had a mom who attended my prenatal bf class but did not deliver
at my hosp. She called on day 2 (day of discharge) w/ questions, concerns,.
and a hx of ? insuff. milk. She cancelled 2 appts and sent her husband in
for a pump and I counseled him for 30min. I gave her the no. of an ibclc who
could make a home visit, but she declined. I gave her LLL. But bottom line
was I could not help her much over the phone. It was her decision. I
encouraged her to see her pedi sooner than 2 wks. then I sent a report to
her pedi re what I had recommended to her. End of story.
