Cathy, we also have moms choosing bfing based on the sex of their baby
(even prenatally). I'm always glad when mom brings that up so we can talk
about it. Sometimes she will change her mind after being affirmed & given
information and decide it will be okay to brstfeed either a boy or a girl.
I suspect (because you see this in a rural area, and I see it in the inner
city) that the problem is out there and moms don't always verbalize it.
(we also work with college educated dietetic interns that personally are
uncomfortable with breastfeeding)
We just need time to listen to mom's feelings, affirm them, and educate --
and time can be fleeting! Just had another dietetic intern who became a
bfing supporter (in her own words!) after 4 days in a WIC rotation. One of
the upcoming interns has been heard to say that bfing is gross. Can't wait
to use the 3 step counseling method with her!!
