Dear Jan,

What a nice surprise to find you here. Remember me (Pat in Cape
Town from ICEA days?) I am so glad that people are addressing the
Ferber issue. His theory has spawned a lot of books, including a South
African one called "Baby Sense" which has been flying off the
bookshelves here for years. It also contains enough misinformation on
breastfeeding to make sure that babies don't thrive and that
breastfeeding is terminated as early as possible.

Thinking back over many years, as I do, it's not unheard of for some
well known 'experts' to change their views, and the realist, and cynic
in me, wonders whether in this electronic age, people like Richard
Ferber have responded to the power of the internet or... perhaps he has
been persuaded by research, and perhaps he's softened with age... or a
combination of them all. (End quote).

It probably is a combination of them all. For whatever reason, we at
least have some ammunition now. In October, a South African
parenting magazine quoted me in the editorial, as having said that
Ferber had "apologised" but pointing out that sadly "books sell, but
apologies don't". (I was unaware that he had written a new book and
am happy to note it, for whatever reason.)

I am also happy to see on the internet that you are marketing Nils
Bergmans's video, "Kangaroo Mother Care: Restoring the Original
Paradigm for Infant Care and Breastfeeding". Nils' work is hugely
important for the understanding of the physical and emotional wellbeing
of babies.

I have some articles on it up on the internet. (I hope talking about this
is not off topic). They are at:

www.primal-page.com/bergman.htm
www.primal-page.com/patparent.htm

At the moment they are up in English, German and Spanish, and
Afrikaans and Xhosa translations are hopefully underway. I am looking
for people to help with translations into French, Portuguese, Italian,
Swedish, any other African languages, etc. The articles are not
exclusively about breastfeeding, but it is an important issue in both.

Warm wishes,
Pat Torngren
