I need some info on how breastfeeding effects a child with Ehler's Danlos
Syndrome. Apparently the mother, grandmother, maternal aunt and her child and
2 other siblings of this baby have this disorder.
10 month old breastfed baby has severe constipation to the point of being
impacted, rectal tearing, etc. The stools are VERY dry and very hard. The
other people in the family with this disorder all developed severe diarrhea
as adults but had this type of constipation problem as infants and children.
The mom lives in a small town (near Ohio State University) with only 2 docs
that treat children. Her pedi has accused her of Munchausen's by proxy
(primarily because he feels the baby isn't being fed enough-parents are
avoiding cereals) and won't refer her to a pediatric gastroenterologist.
Baby's weight gain has been good. H&H is normal. This mom seems intelligent
and has gone through this with 2 other children. So the Munchausen's by proxy
seems unlikely.
Parents cannot go to an outside doc because they just can't pay the out of
pocket costs. Previous physician that treated the 2 siblings wants $70 to
forward copies of the medical records (She is writing the state medical board
about this).
The pedi's only advice at this point is to give the baby some new formula
that has fiber added to it. (How would fiber help if the stools are hard and
dry already?) He does not want the parents to use a glycerin suppository more
than once a week; and that doesn't work. Mom had to remove another impaction
last night.
Does anyone have some advice for this mom?
TIA
Marie Davis, RN, IBCLC
