Gloria, I too was at the edge of my seat watching this one - I was saying "OH
NO OH NO " to his "no breastfeeding with HIV". I have recently seen
research - thanks to Jan Riordan's course, in reference to HIV and breastfeeding and
I thought I would share this info. I'm sure most of you already know this
anyway.
""Mixing breastfeeding with other feedings to gain some of the advantages of
breastmilk but limit the cumulative exposure to infection may damage the
infant's gut, allowing the virus to cross the the intestinal mucosa more easily. An
important prospective study (Lancet 354:471-6, August 7, 1999) by Coutsoudis
et al. in South Africa found that at three months exclusively breastfed babies
had lower rates of transmission of HIV than never-breastfed babies. Infants
who had received both breastmilk and formula had rates of infection 60%
higherthan those who had been exclusively breastfed. This study is continuing. New
data even more strongly supports exclusive breastfeeding and lower HIV+ rates(La
Leche League, South Africa, Summer 2000). Ted Greiner's comments on
breastfeeding by HIV positive women are worth studying because he points out the
tremendous problems of supporting artificial feeding for poor women in developing
nations. " --Jan Riordan

I was shocked with tonight's episode. A good shocked. Dr. Carter is in
Africa still. He was treating an HIV positive pregnant woman. He goes off
telling her she can't breastfeed the baby. They will give her formula--he
made
some comment how great formula was. There was another doctor there who I
know was feeling as I was. She proceeds to tell him that the formula they
receive from UNICEF is powdered and that the mom is in a refugee camp and the
water would not be safe. He counters with let's get bottled water, and she
says
for 8 feeds a day for a year! She then says that the baby would probably
get
(die?) of cholera--can't remember what else--she gave the percentage of how
likely that would be---high. She then said that the chance of mom passing
the
HIV thru her milk was a 3% benefit! Who was working on this one?!
Aloha,
Gloria Thai>>
