I just got back from a death in the family and funeral and had a very full
mailbox!! After spending all day explaining to people what I do ( Board
Certified Lactation Consultant in private practice), and then having to either
explain what the word "lactation" means or watching them squirm and try to
change the subject, I needed a dose of Lactnet!!
I also had an interesting conversation with a Nurse Manager at our local
teaching hospital/medical school birthing center. My hubby asked her wasn't it
time for the hospital to hire a IBCLC to which she replied that they have one.
I told her that no, they had a lactation specialist which is not any official
designation except what the hospital gave to that RN. She didn't know that
there are different lactation titles. She thought that the 2 day BFing
educator workshop given here in NC is the same as being a certified IBCLC.
And so that may explain why I run into such uneducated HCP's here.
