realize I am being incredibly naive, but do new mothers really need
gift
packs at all? After all, they are going home with the nicest gift anyone
could have.

Let's all think back on what *we* did with the garbage that was handed
out to us when we were given gift packs- we likely added to the waste
stream. When I went for my first appointment with my ob for my first
pregnancy I was handed a bag of "gifts" they called it; advertising
*I* called it. Useless samples of products, coupons for said useless
products, a coupon for a dollar off "What to Expect When You're
Expecting", sign up forms for the "Baby Clubs". I threw it all away.

When my elder was born I was given a large diaper bag with pads, mesh
panties for the wonderful bleeding after birth, chuck's pads, nose
suctioner for my baby.... oh, an expired "sample" can of formula. I
used the useful stuff, even used the huge diaper bag for awhile until
I didn't need so many diapers and clothing changes. And recieving
blankets. The stuff related to post partum bleeding was handy because
they were built for the reality of what happens after birth.... When
my younger was born I was given a "breastfeeding" pack by one of the
ABM companies and never used a bit of it. Even my husband wouldn't be
caught dead using that kind of *stupid* *ugly* advertising diaper bag.
I did use the handknit booties that the Hospital Auxiliary gives
away, but you have to stop by the gift shop and pick them out, so I
bet a lot of first time parents dont' bother. I, OTOH, knew what a
struggle it would be to keep socks on a newborn so I collected
booties, socks, etc before she was born. :-)
