I think our Freedom of Speech nerves can relax. Yes, dopey authors have
the Constitutional right to write dopey books, but that doesn't mean a
library has to purchase them, or lend them. Librarians and "Friends of
the Library" committees are responsible for using library funds to
purchase books that are relevant to the communities they serve. An
infant feeding and development expert in a community, an IBCLC, should
be able to put in her .02. The librarian has the discretion to do what
she will. As for pulling books from the shelves...I think how-to books
are removed from circulation when they become outdated to free up shelf
space for books that are more relevant and more likely to get checked
out. So I don't see anyone's Constitutional rights getting trampled.
OTOH, trying to convince your local Friends of the Library committee
that a popular book written by a well respected pediatrician is
"dangerous" might make said infant feeding and development expert come
across as a bit "out there"....
Probably more effective and welcome to suggest specific books to include
in the parenting collection and make a donation towards purchase. Then
we just have to get people to read them!
