Thanks to all who replied privately and to the list about this. It
was particularly interesting to find out where it came from. We in
NMAA can relate to the need back in the early years to *not* have the
word 'breast' or 'breastfeeding' in a name. That is why NMAA was
called 'Nursing Mothers' Association' in the 1960s. We also now have
problems with people thinking we are all nurses!

Nursing as a term for breastfeeding is less common in Australia than
the US. Here is means to cuddle or hold (a baby) or look after sick
people in a hospital, etc. So if you are 'nursing' a baby, you are
just holding him or her.
