I had a client call me with the concern that she has a severe PUPPS rash
that occurred while she was pregnant with her second child, and recurred
after delivery. It is a very itchy rash with "little hard red lumps", on
her hands, face, neck, belly and arms. Her eyes swell shut. Her OB Drs.
identified this as a PUPPS rash and said its severity was unusual.

She also experienced this with her first child, during the pregnancy as
well as when he was 4 months old. During the pregnancy, she was on
Prednisone for a week. When the rash recurred at 4 months, she was advised
to wean that baby. The rash did go away within 1 1/2 to 2 weeks of weaning.

She also stated that the rash the first time was much worse and that
generalized edema was assocoated with it both times. The first time, the
edema was so bad that her legs were "purple".

She does wish to continue breastfeeding this baby, she feels that weaning
last time was probably unnecessary, that the rash may have gone away on its
own. Her concern is that maybe the baby is being exposed to some kind of
poison and that maybe she should wean, because it would be harmful to the
baby. Her pediatricians referred her to me.

I told her that I was not aware of any reason that her inflammatory
condition would be harmful for the baby, and that she should continue to
breastfeed. She gave her permission for me to put this on the Lactnet, to
see if any of you had information about this problem.

I would appreciate your ideas.
