A student of mine has given permission to post.Has been exclusively bf for 8
months with no problems at all. Had a sore throat (without fever or
medications) and since then has noticed a decrease in her milk supply. Baby
was bf every 3 hours and now feeds every hour- seems to be frustrated at the
lack of flow.(mother's perception) This is the woman's 11th breastfed baby
and she has truly considered all the angles(getting extra sleep, sleeping
with baby, eating and drinking properly, feeds on demand as long as baby
wants, there does not seem to be any growth spurt and she is not becoming any
more active like walking, etc. ,there is no significant stress-besides that
which comes along with raising a family with 11 kids- but that isn't new for
her, no meds, is currently well, baby seems happy and content and active
between feedings) She has not taken a pregnancy test though she started
menstruation, she thinks, just after the decrease. The baby breastfeeds
eagerly, but only for every short time and then "sucks on empty". She feels
she has tried everything to build up the milk for the past two weeks to no
avail. Baby refuses ANY other substance in mouth from any utensil -cup,
spoon, or bottle. The mother is under the impression that the baby is losing
weight and she will take to be weighed tomorrow and then again in a week to
get an accurate picture.
Can the milk dry up like that suddenly at 8 months? If it was hormonolly
related wouldn't it readjust after a week or so? Does anyone have any novel
suggestions to increase milk supply (I suggested "switch feeding") ? Any
other ideas to consider?
TIA for suggestions.
