Dear all,
There are later studies that seem to cast a shadow on use of Metoclopramide, I
can't remember a mother being prescribed this in my neck of the woods for a
long long time because of concerns. The study that I know of is 'Common
breastfeeding problems' S. Inch, M.J. Renfrew. In Effective Care in Pregnancy
and Childbirth Ed. I Chalmers, M. Enkin M. Keirse. Oxford University Press
1989.
I am led to believe that Metoclopramide has well known side effects such as
nausea, headaches, tiredness and sweating for the mother. There have been
concerns about possible neural development defects in newborn animals that
were exposed to dopamine receptor antagonists, but I do not have references
for this. Ah, I just found another reference - Budd SC, Erdman SH, Long DM et
al. (1993) Improved lactation with metoclopramide. Clin Pediatr, 32:53.. This,
I think says its OK to use, very confusing! Bye, Helen M. Woodman NCT
Breastfeeding Counsellor, UK.
