A dairy science student at Ohio State University (huge university with
highly-respected agriculture programs along with many other top researchers
in many fields) told me that calves are force-fed colostrum. Because
colostrum is so vitally important to the calf, the breeders don't trust the
calf to get all of it from the mother on their own, so they pump it from mom
and force-feed it to the calf.

At least that's the explanation I was given.
