Just curious to know if anyone out there has experience with setting up or belonging to a Journal Club.

This came up recently at the last LLLI conference in San Jose. I was attending a session about a program set up to train MD interns. In passing the lecturer mentioned the importance of keeping up with research and said "I do hope you all belong to Journal Clubs".

The idea intrigues me and I did a search on Google, the most illustrative article was one from NPR "All things Considered" -- you can hear it at the link below. It describes how the speaker became interested in a subject but, not havng a background in science, he could barely understand the research: After some time in the journal club however, he became more and more comfortable with the terminology and research.

"New research findings are generally published in academic journals, where they become part of the vast record of scientific data and ideas. But as medical student and commentator Joe Wright tells us, scientific journal articles have another life beyond news reports and library shelves. Just as literature aficionados have book clubs, people who care about research have journal clubs."

Here is another good site describing how one was set up for Med Students:

I feel it would be a good way to keep up with research -- a bit like belonging to lactnet but even more focused. Plus for hospital LC's it could be multidisciplinary -- a way to involve other specialties.
