This is not really related to lactation but in the interests of completeness, I think that this is important. I don't know if this link will work but there was a suspicious timing of the release of Searle's document and the approval of RU486 in the US. RU486 was approved for use in the US only in conjunction with misoprostol. Several weeks before that approval, Searle released the document in question which said that misoprostol should not be used for use in pregnancy. There is concern that the letter was released because Searle did not want to be associated with RU486. Misoprostol like most drugs is dangerous when used incorrectly and, like all drugs, has potential side effects. This does not make it necessarily a "bad" drug. It has been used in particular situations without problems for many years and can be very useful. This is a VERY complicated issue and I am not trying to open a can of worms. So far as I know, it does not have any documented effects on lactation. National Public Radio covered the timing of Searle's letter and the approval of RU486 on 10/12/2000.
