Although this certainly fits with Nils Bergman's work, this actually came
from Suzanne Cox's Clinical Practice  Day session  at ILCA on "Helping
Parents to Write a Post-birth Plan to Enhance Normal Neonatal Physiology",
Session C2-A.  I'm awaiting the arrival of the CD of this session that I
ordered at the conference, but have already been telling moms about this in
my prenatal bfing classes.

 

Suzanne suggests that no one but mom hold the baby in the first 24 hours,
and that baby not be bathed for at least 24 hours also.  She suggests that
if mom bathes or showers, she avoid washing her breasts and chest, to avoid
washing off the odor of the amniotic fluid while baby is learning to find
the breast.
