Dear Friends,

I am saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Clavano. I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a day with her at Baguio Hospital in the Philippines.

She was a remarkable woman, small but feisty. Long before we had the Code to protect breastfeeding, Dr. Clavano closed the doors to the formula companies and all women, (including her staff who had babies) were expected to breastfeed. The death rate of infants plummeted. My good friend, Dr. Wah Wong, was a UNICEF worker in the Philippines at that time and he urged Dr. Clavano to write up the stats but she had no time so UNICEF provided the support.

Dr. Clavano and Dr. Wong, (later became President of Unicef Canada) remained close friends until his death in 2001. He never tired of telling Dr. Clavano's story.

To read this remarkable story, contact UNICEF for Assignment Children / The Results of a Change in Hospital Practices. Reprint from no. 55 /56 1981.
