Hi Fiona,

Just got back from a 6 day conference, and am trying to catch up with the
mail - first the computer glitched on me "host won't do what you want him to
do" and secondly, can't believe the mail. So, I'm only on the 18th of May
digest! Yikes! And I left on the 17th. So I'm a bit behind....

My sister who had her 3rd baby in Amsterdam was encouraged to drink Fennel
tea - 3 to 4 cups a day for Rebecca's gassiness. Lyn stated it really
worked, and she noted a difference when she didn't drink it. The Puritans
nibbled the seeds during their long church meeings, hence it being called the
"meetin seed" (infor from back of jar). I often wondered if it helped
decrease their gas from sitting all day!! Lyn said the midwife in Amsterdam
said it has been used for years and years - something passed down from one
midwife to another. The pharmacist (or reasonable facsimile thereof) when
she got the tea immediately said to her, "oh, you must be breastfeeding".
So, apparently it worked. I've tried it with moms here, and they have liked
it. Didn't realize it was also a diuretic - ? reducing areolar edema???
 Interesting thought.

Bev, I see you got your answer re the voids & stools in the early days. I
think we do tend to base our "standards" on formula/water fed babies who are
"encouraged" to take anywhere from 1/2 to 1 or 1 1/2 oz even the first 24 to
48 hrs. When we think about the total amount of colostrum taken in the first
few feeds, it isn't nearly that amount!

Sort of like eating Thanksgiving dinner - but at a fast food restaurant!
