A client called me and asked why her pediatrician gave her baby an injection
of vitamin k at the one month exam. Baby was term, 6#10oz at birth, has
gained 3.5lbs
since then. He told her that the fact that she was exclusively breastfeeding
was the reason he gave the vitamin k. I have never heard of this practice.
Has anyone else. Her real question to me was, "if breastmilk is the perfect
food for babies, why did her baby need vitamin K"? I told her she should
have directed the question to the ped, but I would check into this. Any
ideas?????

Thanks,

Marsha Perryman, RN, IBCLC
