Laura: Redux (dexfenfluramine) has been discussed before. Try the
archives. I don't think there are any helpful data about its use in
lactation, but I just wanted to comment on the likely futility of
using such a product for 3 weeks. To my knowledge, none of these appetite
suppressants has been shown to produce a sustained weight loss, and some,
like its predecessor pondimin (fenfluramine, often combined with
phentermine in the popular fen-phen combination), need to be continued
indefinitely to maintain any weight loss. The use of such products in
anyone other than a morbidly obese person who is suffering medical
problems from her obesity is probably not justified, since they have
significant side effects. One potentially serious adverse effect of redux
is pulmonary hypertension.

The current scenario may well lead to a prematurely weaned
11-month-old, regained weight after 3 weeks of redux and frustrated mother
and baby. Is this mother's obesity so serious that she would risk this
outcome? What other weight loss strategies has she tried? Alicia Dermer,
MD, who wishes fewer people believed in these *#&! diet pills.
