I had a visit from a mother of a baby that will be undergoing open heart
surgery at the Texas Children's hospital in April. This baby has been
totally breastfed since birth and at the Dr. visit in preparation for
surgery the mother was told that the baby will have to receive bottles
after the surgery because they had to know the exact amount of milk
taken in after surgery. This mother has been trying to get her baby to
accept a bottle of expressed milk, but has not had much success. She
told the nurse that her baby is refusing the bottles but they insist
that there is no other alternative. This mother lives in the Lafayette
Louisiana area which is about a 4 hour drive to Houston. Is there
anyone in the Houston area that might be willing to try to intervene for
this mother at the Texas Children's Hospital???
Please let me know so I can refer this mother for further guidance.
Thank you.

I can't really help much other than to say, my neighbor went through a
similar issue, except that her baby's surgery was a few days after birth. They
wanted her to bottlefeed for several months to "be sure he was eating enough". She
sort of went along with it, partially for a few days, but eventually
convinced them that she would watch weight gain and/or weigh baby before and after
eating.
I know from personal experience of having a son with a few surgeries, they
always went about saying, He will have to take a bottle right after. Luckily, he
was as stubborn as I was and even the time when they tried to sneak one in
before I got to recovery, he refused. I can't imagine if the child gets there
and refuses a bottle that they could possibly not allow her to BF.
