I want to thank Maurenne for pushing me out of my nest and off to the
hospital library. Found a lot of fun things.

Neat article on "BFing twins and higher order multiples" by Karen Gromada
and Amy Spangler. JOGNN, July/August 1998, Vol.27, No. 4, 441-449. Says
to begin pumping within 6 hours of delivery, if babies can't nurse. (Now
that's a goal to shoot for. I used to rant and rave if it was more than 12
hours.) Rec. double pumping with a big pump, 8 x day, increasing to 10-12
with at least one at night as mom recovers from delivery and babies are
growing and getting ready to come home. You'll love some of the references
by Lact-friends - Bradshaw, Newman, Riordan, Walker.

Wasn't someone hunting for info on developing a hospital-based lactation
program? JOGNN Sept-Oct 1998, Vol. 27, No.5, 503-510. "Growth &
development of a hospital-based lactation program and mother's own milk
bank."

Actually located JOGNN 1998 all issues and looking at the whole year at one
time I saw an impressive list of BF articles. Nice to see the on-going
support for BFing!

Has anyone mentioned the article "Sore Nipples in Breast-feeding Women: A
Clinical Trial of Wound Dressings vs Conventional Care."? Arch Pediatr
Adolesc Med, Vol. 152, 1077-1082, Nov. 1998. Says prevention .....should
be instituted; if sore nip develop, technique teaching, shells and
lanolin were more effective than moist wound dressings and should remain
first line therapy.

Also "Relaxation Training and Breast Milk Secretory IgA", Arch Pediatr
Adolesc Med, Vol.152, 1065-1070

And then there is the article Maurenne found.................. I think it
says that the theory helps identify factors that affect duration of BF and
they suggest that it may be possible to increase duration by intervening to
alter beliefs about outcomes of BFing, help women gain strategies that
change their control beliefs and help mom identify people who are
supportive of BF. Theory includes: behavior is a function of intention to
perform the behavior; intention is predicted by attitude toward the
behavior and attitude is predicted by beliefs about outcome of behavior.
Nice statement about "limitations in the breast-feeding knowledge of
health care providers as well as routines with little scientific foundation
implemented in some hospitals interfere with establishment of BFing."
They really did use some BIG words and convoluted sentences. Now if my
dictionary just said what "heuristic" means I could figure the whole
article out... I just know I could. Lact-friends used as ref include
Auerbach, Dettwyler, & Mulford.

Goodnight all, Pat in SNJ
